Melania Trump’s annual White House Christmas decoration has been repeatedly scrutinized by her critics. Social media users have often trolled her whenever her personal aesthetic did not meet their expectations.

One of her most controversial White House Christmas décor stints remains the “red Christmas tree” decoration in 2018, where she chose a deep red color for all the trees.

The theme for the Christmas decoration in 2018 was America’s Treasures. While some MAGA loyalists found the decor idea unique and chic, others were not quite impressed.

Many social media users compared the deep red trees to the show, The Handmaid’s Tale. The plot of the show revolves around a dystopian world where women are oppressed and exploited to bear children for an authoritarian and patriarchal society.

The handmaids on the show are required to wear blood red gowns, which were eerily similar to the color that Melania had chosen for the Christmas trees in 2018.

She broke her silence on the controversy that the decor idea had created back then and was quick to defend it. According to the Irish Star, during her appearance at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, Melania said, “We’re in the 21st century, and everybody has a different taste.

The First Lady added, “I think they look fantastic. In real life, they look more beautiful, and you’re all very welcome to visit the White House, the people’s house.”

The 55-year-old faced a severe backlash over the red Christmas trees, where one social media user stated, “So Melania decorated the White House for Christmas – with blood red trees right out of The Shining: Holiday Version.”

Another user on X said, “Oh sure, the ‘Hell on Earth Christmas Trees’ aren’t very subtle, Melania.” An X user said, “Maybe she was portraying The Handmaid’s Tale by metaphor.”

A social media user chimed in, “Back to how Melania Trump decorated the White House, a creepy dystopian red Christmas tree display devoid of love, decorations, or care.”

Another comment read, “Handmaid’s Tale. Prescient.” Another user added, “We all know Melania Trump has no taste. Classless.”

Meanwhile, Melania was also not spared from some criticism for her White House Christmas tree decoration this year. The theme for this year was titled Home Is Where The Heart Is which was supposed to be a tribute to America’s spirit of “generosity, patriotism, and gratitude.”

However, her choice of “blue butterflies” adorning the Christmas decoration in the Red Room of the White House. The FLOTUS added more than 10,000 of them, which was said to have represented her support for her Be Best Initiative, which works extensively for foster children.

But contrary to her vision, many social media users did not agree with the aesthetic. They called the idea of the blue butterflies as part of the White House Christmas decorations “creepy.”

One of the social media users called it “pretty ugly.” Another X user stated, “Melania Trump decorating anything is a joke. Except maybe her face with makeup.” However, it seems that the First Lady stands by her aesthetic and remains unbothered by the criticism dampening her Christmas spirit.
