While there have been multiple reasons why relationships don’t work out, a peanut allergy causing someone to back out of a date is something new. A man went on a date with a woman after being set up by some mutual friends.
However, he called it off just after meeting her twice and learning that she had a life-threatening peanut allergy. He took to Reddit for some advice and consolation about whether he handled the early breakup well. He did not want to change his diet for a potential partner, but the woman and the mutual friends disagreed with his reasoning.
On Sunday, December 21, 2025, an account by the name of u/BusinessBobcat9888 shared a post titled “AITAH for cancelling a third date over a peanut allergy?” on the r/AITAH subreddit. He started off by saying that a friend of his set him up with a coworker of hers, as she believed the two would be “perfect for each other.”

The man revealed that the two went to a coffee shop for their first date, and then they agreed to follow it up with a second date in a botanical garden next week. It was during the second date that the woman opened up him about her peanut allergy, labeling it as “life-threatening.”
Initially, he chose to sympathize with her by stating that dealing with such an allergy might have been very stressful. The duo even planned to meet for lunch the following week for the third date.
However, after the date at the botanical garden, the man started to reflect on the entire conversation. He realized that he just loved peanut butter too much, and he doesn’t see himself giving it up or changing his dietary habits for a relationship.
“I love peanuts and eat them all the time. I put peanut butter in/on a lot of stuff, including my dog’s toys, which he drags all over my apartment, getting invisible peanut oil everywhere, I’m sure. I can’t see a potential relationship with this woman ever progressing to a serious stage without me changing my diet and habits,” he wrote.

He then stated that after being on two dates, he wanted to be more respectful of her time and cancel the third date. He wrote that he called the woman and told her that he was sorry, he couldn’t make it to the planned lunch date. The woman asked him if he wanted to reschedule, but the man apologized and told her that he didn’t think this relationship would work out in the long run.
When asked about the reasoning, the man stated that he honestly told her about his love for peanuts and did not intentionally want to harm her in the future. The woman told him there were safety precautions, but the man wasn’t willing to put up with that.
The woman called the man immature and hung up the phone. After that, she told the mutual friends about what happened and told her coworker that the man was a “massive douche.” The Reddit commenters also made their opinions known.

Most chose to sympathize with the man and appreciated his honesty. “You like peanuts more than you like her. That’s fine,” a user wrote. While another stated, “The point of dating is to see if you two are compatible.” “To be fair, I like peanut butter more than I do most people,” commented a third user.
