It seems like even the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have to make some budget cuts from time to time. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly downsizing their team amid the renaming of the Archewell Foundation.

In 2020, Harry and Meghan launched the Archewell Foundation. Their goal with the foundation was to tell people to “show up, do good.” The couple had stepped down from their Royal roles in the United Kingdom earlier that year.

On Friday, December 19, 2025, Prince Harry and Markle announced that they are restructuring the Archewell Foundation. They are also renaming the foundation to Archewell Philanthropies and adopting a more fiscal sponsorship model.

It was recently reported that the couple has let go of three of their staff members from their jobs at the organization. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s spokesperson recently spoke to PEOPLE and stated that staff cuts are inevitable.

“The move toward a fiscal sponsor operating model does mean that some staff redundancies are inevitable, particularly with junior admin roles.” The spokesperson added, “We will not be discussing these personnel details further, other than to say that we are honored to have worked with incredibly talented and caring people who dedicate themselves to helping others.”

This statement was released after the Daily Mail reported that three staff members working at Archewell Foundation were let go. The three staffers were informed, according to reports, that the charity was shutting down. However, as mentioned above, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had announced that the foundation wasn’t closing; it was simply being reconstructed before its fifth anniversary.

The announcement stated, “This next chapter allows Prince Harry and Meghan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to broaden their global philanthropic efforts as a family, with meaningful reach and maximum impact, grounded in the same values, partnerships, and their commitment to show up and do good.”

Their goal with the Archewell Philanthropies is to create a new operating model and make the organization a long-term family enterprise. They want to move away from the tightly managed and standalone operations of the Foundation that required their day-to-day involvement.

Adopting a philanthropic approach signals that the new model is designed to evolve and grow over time. It could also have more flexibility by moving away from the administrative approach. The new model will have a 501(c)(3) status that will oversee all the finances and global grantmaking on the administrative side on things. Meanwhile, Harry and Meghan will continue to guide their mission.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle even want their children, six-year-old Prince Archie and four-year-old Princess Lilibet, to be involved in the reconstruction of the Archewell Foundation into the Archewell Philanthropies. They are building a long-term philanthropic identity as a family.

“After five beautiful years, the Archewell Foundation is becoming Archewell Philanthropies. This charitable entity allows the couple and their children to expand upon their global philanthropic endeavors as a family,” their statement said.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle even made their children “show up, do good,” as they volunteered at the Foundation in November. The foundation has partnered up with Our Big Kitchen Los Angeles to prepare and distribute meals before Thanksgiving weekend.
