‘Tis the season to be jolly, but a statement by Prince Harry could have gotten him in trouble. The Royal Family member has said that the Christmas Eve gumbo of his wife, Meghan Markle, isn’t as delicious as her mother, Doria Ragland’s cooking.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are cooking something special this holiday season. On Wednesday, December 3, 2025, the couple released a Netflix special called With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration. The special offered viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the couple’s holiday traditions.

The special presentation featured Meghan cooking her mother’s signature Christmas Eve dish, gumbo. She was making the special dish for Top Chef judge Tom Colicchio. Just as the Duchess of Sussex was stirring the pot, the Prince walked into the kitchen. The aroma of the stew drew him into the kitchen. With a kiss to his wife, the 41-year-old made a wholesome and heartfelt confession. He started off by saying, “You must know that I was coming.”

After that, Harry claimed that Meghan’s mother, Doria, makes his favorite gumbo. “Gumbo for me is one of my favorites, especially her mom’s. But before the fish goes in.”Despite getting mad that her husband prefers her mother’s cooking over hers, Meghan shared a wholesome gesture her mother does for her son-in-law. “She always saves a little portion on the side for him.”

Joking about her own version of the dish, she teased Prince Harry by indicating that she was using a spicier version of the andouille sausages. The 44-year-old said, “I’ll give you a little towel because you’re going to sweat.”

The Prince then took a bite of his wife’s gumbo and decided to make a little joke of his own. “I can feel it puncturing through the top of my head right now.”

Harry then complimented his wife, but maintained that her mother still makes the best version of the dish. “It is delicious,” he said. “I’m not so sure it’s as good as your mom’s, but it’s certainly close.”

It made Meghan’s jaw drop. Tom Colicchio couldn’t help but let out a “Wow.” The Duchess began laughing and said, “What?! Oh my gosh.” She then added that her mother will appreciate the compliment, and he said a good thing about his mother-in-law. “Well, my mom will love you for that. You know what? What a good thing to say for your mother-in-law.”

The Netflix special With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration features many notable guests. The list includes Meghan’s close friends Kelly McKee  Zajfen, author-producer Lindsay Roth, along with Tennis legend Naomi Osaka, and hospitality expert Will Guidara.

In the trailer of the special, which was released last month, Meghan admitted that she loves the holiday season as it allows their family to connect with the people they love and embrace tradition. “I love the holiday season. It’s about finding time to connect with the people we love, embracing traditions, and making new ones.” The lighthearted moment quickly became a fan favorite, with viewers calling it one of the most relatable exchanges in the special.
